Masa Tortilla Chips Honest Review (All Flavors) | Seed Oil Free Beef Tallow Chips

Here's my honest review of MASA chips made by Ancient Crunch, which are organic corn tortilla chips made with 100% grass-fed beef tallow. Not only are Masa chips seed oil free and made with clean ingredients, but they're the best tasting chips I've ever tried!

Most corn tortilla chips found at the grocery store or in restaurants are made with inflammatory seed oils, such as vegetable or or canola oil. These ultra-processed oils are very harmful for our health and are a major contributor to the rise of chronic disease.

MASA Chips are known as "traditional tortilla chips", and are made with 100% grass-fed beef tallow and organic, pesticide free corn. Ingredients don't get any cleaner than that!

Here's my full review of all the various Masa chip flavors (pros, con's, and what to expect).

What do Masa chips taste like?

Masas chips are the best tasting tortilla chips I've tried! The grass-fed beef tallow adds a really nice layor of flavor to the corn. The chips are thick and have the perfect crunch to them. They are such a treat!

We recently had some friends over and served Masa chips with homemade salsa to them. They couldn't stop raving about how they were the best tortilla chips they'd ever tasted. Masa chips really are that good.

How are Masa chips "healthier" than other chips?

Masa chips are made with 100% grass-fed beef tallow and organic corn. The vast majority of other tortilla chip brands are made with inflammatory seed oils (even organic chips). These fats are harmful to our health.

Corn tortilla chips really aren't junk food when the ingredients and sourcing are high quality.

Something I immediately noticed after trying Masa chips is that I actually found them to be filling. That's because they're made with real, nourishing fat.

I remember going to Mexican restaurants in the past and not being able to stop eating their chips (and feeling sick after eating them). The reason for that is that seed oils are not filling and acutally make you more hungry. Real fat such as beef tallow does not have that effect.

Masa chips are also made with nixtamalized corn, which adds to the nutrition of their chips. Nixtamalization is an ancient process that was created to improve digestability and nutritent absorbtion.

Does Masa chips offer discounts or coupon codes?

They also have a "subscribe and save" option.

Are Masa chips worth the price?

In my opinion, yes they are! They are expensive, there's no doubt. This is the only "con" of Masa Chips. But I find them to be worth the price. One bag tends to last me a while, as these chips are much more filling than those made with seed oils.

Of course, these are a "nice to have" rather than a "need to have". Not everyone can afford Masa chips. We can hope that increased demand for higher quality snacks will drive the prices down in the future. For now, I am doing my best to vote with my dollar where I can!

Masa chips flavor options

Masa Chips currently have 5 different flavors—original, blue, lime, cobanero, and churro. Personally, my top favorite chip is the original. Call me a "plain jane" but there's something about the simplicity of a plain corn tortilla chip that I love.

That being said, I really enjoy the cobanero if I'm craving something with a bit of a spicy kick. The churro has a light sweet flavor that is more of a "dessert" chip!

My least favorite flavor is the lime. For me, the lime tastes much too strong. If you're a big fan of lime, you might just enjoy them!

I have not tried the blue chips yet, but am looking forward to it. Ancient Crunch (the parent company of MASA chips) is actually working on releasing beef tallow potato chips. We'll keep an eye out for those and will update you once we get to taste test them!

What recipes should I make with Masa chips?

Use them as you would any other tortilla chips! Here are some of our favorite ways to eat our Masa Chips:

  • Brisket and raw cheese nachos

  • With homemade salsa

  • With homemade queso

  • With homemade guacamole

Sometimes I'll have a few plain chips along with my homemade beef jerky, and they taste great on their own.

Are Masa chips considered keto or carnivore?

No, they are not. They're made with organic corn, which means they have a signifcant amount of carbs in them.

Personally, I make sure to eat plenty of high quality animal protein when having Masa chips to maintain blood sugar. I feel really good eating them and find I don't overeat them as I used to when I ate tortilla chips made with seed oils. I feel satisfied after eating 5-6 chips.

Can I find Masa chips in grocery stores?

Masa chips are available in some retailers in the USA, mostly small health food stores. At the time of writing this article, they are only available in a few states (so certainly not widespread).

The best option currently is to order online. You can save 20% off your order with the discount code RACH. We hope to see Masa chips in many more stores in the future!

In Summary

Masa Chips truly are the best corn tortilla chip on the market—both in taste and in quality of ingredients. I'm convinced that chips are meant to be made with beef tallow. I'd highly recommend giving them a try if they're within your budget.

Random note: Masa chips also offers a 100% cotton swimsuit. Most modern swimsuits are made with plastic, so this was really exciting to find. The code "RACH" will give you a discount on that as well if they happen to be in stock. You can find them under the merch category on their website.
